Waste

It takes 500 years before a beer can is decomposed, and every year the average Australian family produces enough rubbish to fill a three bedroom house (1)(2). Waste is a huge area we can improve! First and foremost USE GREEN BAGS FFS!! Australians use around 3.92 billion bags a year and approximately 50 million gets into the litter stream a year (3), if we reduce our consumption of them, it is a big deal!! Another big thing you can do is to dispose of waste responsibly. Lead car batteries, and even our disposal batteries can be really harmful to our local waterways, which may end up affecting the food we eat and these toxins affect the brain directly, and THAT IS BAD, particularly for kids! Here are some things you might not have considered:

  1. If you want to give away an old item that is still in good condition check out Freecycle: https://www.freecycle.org/
  2. Plastic bags, chip packets and other soft plastic can be recycled in specific bins in most Coles grocery shops https://www.coles.com.au/corporate-…
  3. Batteries, light globes and paint: CLICK HERE, Also most Aldis will take batteries for free, and Officeworks will take fluorescent bulbs.
  4. Mobile Batteries: You can visit your nearest JB Hifi or Australia post to pick up a recycling satchel that you can send them back with. By recycling mobile phones one program, MobileMuster, has reduced the need to mine 29,00 tonnes of precious metal ore, which is equivalent to keeping 2,600 cars off the road, planting 57,000 trees or preventing 9,400 tonnes of CO2 greenhouse gas emissions (4).
